New York Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

September 16, 2025

World Trade Center Oculus

With so many free and ticketed events, New York City is the place to be this fall! The season got off to a great start with New York Fashion Week. Now that’s over, there are many more great things to do in the city, including the New York Film Festival beginning at the end of September. Then there’s a month long celebration of Hispanic culture on top of it all! From September 15th through October 15th, Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates the rich cultural heritage and contributions of Hispanic and Latinos in America. Notice that it does not begin on the first day of September but on September 15th. Why? Hispanic Heritage is not only a cultural event, it also celebrates individual freedom and liberation. In fact, the month long celebration coincides with several independence days for Latin American countries, including Mexican Independence Day on September 16th. It’s a way to remind people that freedom and independence are not to be taken for granted; the freedoms we enjoy today are the direct product of sacrifices made by people who fought for them time and time again. In New York City, the month is particularly relevant as Latinos comprise nearly 1/3 of New York City’s growing population. New York City tourism and conventions celebrates the month with “Viva NYC “an initiative that highlights Latino/Hispanic culture, via performances, cultural exhibitions, culinary events, and community programs. Viva NYC offers New York City residence, a way to participate in his about heritage directly and embrace the rich, cultural heritage. Specific events and offerings may be found online at several websites, including:

Finally, one of New York’s premier film events is returning this September. The New York Latino film festival returns and it’s is celebrating its 25th Anniversary ! Tickets are on sale from September 13 through September 21, 2025. Festival highlights include : A Tiro Limpio / In a Hail of Bullets – a highly rated feature film. An action packed Dominican thriller, it contains scenes reminiscent of the classic action film Scarface. The festival also includes a special event : “Filmmakers and Creatives Mixer” scheduled to be held on September 17 from 5 to 9 PM. In partnership with Warner Bros.Discovery, the mixer honors OneFifty filmmakers and grantees. The event is free, but you have to register via RSVP online.
